The home was opened to the public in 1930 by Cornelia Vanderbilt
Cecil, only child of George and Edith Vanderbilt, and her husband,
British diplomat John Francis Amherst Cecil, at the request of
Asheville city officials, to help spur tourism in the area during
the great Depression.
Today
the Biltmore is still owned by the Vanderbilt family. Cornelia and
John Francis Amherst Cecil's son, William A.V. Cecil, is the current
estate owner. His son, Bill Cecil Jr., is chief executive officer of
The Biltmore Company, which includes the estate, the Inn on Biltmore
Estate, and Biltmore Estate Wine Company.
The house totals 175,000 square feet and encompasses 4 acres -
roughly equal to 88 average-sized homes today. In 1894 it took 438
employees to keep the estate running, today more than 1,500 people
work for Biltmore.
